Description

Letters written in French by Maj. Steuben (1730-1794), who was a participant in the founding of the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, the predecessor of Hamilton College.


Inventory

Includes French transcriptions and English translations of thirteen letters.

Baron Friedrich Von Steuben was an officer in the French military but was sent to America to help Washington organize the army. He served under Washington at Valley Forge, rose to the position of Inspector-General of the Continental Army in 1778 and wrote the drill manual adopted by the Continental Army.

Digitization

Digitization of this collection was done in-house at 600 dpi, 24-bit color and saved as uncompressed TIF images. CONTENTdm delivers JPEG2000 versions of the images.

Translation

The translations and transcriptions were provided by John A. Gallucci (professor of French at Colgate University) and students in French 292, New York/New France, Spring Semester 2005 at Hamilton College. Final Report
