This is a collection of correspondence related to Lucinda (Morrison) Dean (1795-1883). It is a subcollection of letters from the Dean-Judson Family Papers held by the College Archives.
This collection includes images of 160 letters (619 pages), a list of names mentioned, and pre-defined searches for writers and addressees. No transcripts are provided.
Lucinda (Morrison) Dean was born in 1795 in New York state. In about 1845 she was married to John Dean, a son of James Dean who was one of the founders of Hamilton College (see biographical information below). Most of the letters were written to Lucinda Dean from members of her family, including her sisters Hannah Morrison (Mrs. Ebenezer Griffin) and Betsey Morrison (Mrs. John Williams) and from her daughters M. Louisa Dean, Ellen Dean (Mrs. Hiram J. Graham).
About James Dean (1748-1823) - James Dean was born in Groton, CT, 20 August 1748, son of John Dean and Sarah Douglas and died 10 September, 1823, in Westmoreland, New York. At age 12 Dean was sent by his parents to reside at Onohoquaga on the Susquehana River, Brome county, New York, with Indian missionaries. He took up residence in Oneida county, New York and participated in the founding of Rev. Samuel Kirkland's Hamilton-Oneida Academy and helped select the first 6-8 Indian boys who became pupils at the Academy. Dean later served as Treasurer of Hamilton College, the succeeding institution.
Description of the Dean-Judson Family Papers, 1794-1932 - This collection includes correspondence, ms. material, deeds, programs, journals, clippings, genealogies of Joslyn, Dean, Hills, and Cole, map of the farm of James Dean, 1819. Journals by S. Sheldon Judson, 1873-1907; Helen Dean Judson, 1874-1883. Correspondents include Lucinda Dean, her daughters Mary Dean Ryan, Louise, Ellen Dean Graham, & Susan Wells, David Wells, Lucinda’s niece Annette Robbins, Lucinda’s sisters H. Digitization of this collection was done in-house at 600 dpi, 24-bit color and saved as uncompressed TIF images. The delivery images were produced in full RGB color, 800 pixels wide, with sharpening applied when necessary to facilitate readability.
